SMK Tarcisian Convent’s choir team has done it again! After many years of observing a decline in their performance, things have never looked better.

Recent updates: They won the zone, district and state level inter-school competitions. They are now proudly representing Perak for the Nationals.

The competition will be held in Pasir Gudang, Johor from the 1st to 3rd of July.

Veinnill is a part of this winning team. We wish her and the team all the best for the nationals. Congrats on the job well done!

Grease

Last Saturday, Hannah took part in the musical, Grease, a production of her school. She played Sandy. The play was held in Politeknik Ungku Omar.

You can catch parts of the play through Youtube. Search under IIS Production or go straight to the link below:

Phantom of the Opera

Myinthten had the privilege of watching the ‘Phantom of the Opera’ play (a day earlier) which was staged on the 10, 11 and 12th of April 2009 in Ipoh.

Nigel and Neil both played roles in the play. According to Myinthten, the play was great and the singing was fabulous.

Veinnill and I were eager to attend the play but, tickets were sold out so fast for all three days. Anyway, received good reviews so, congrats once again on a wonderful performance, guys. Nigel and Neil, you guys rock!!!

Progressing in Taekwon-do

Last Saturday, we attended Myinthten’s grading. At first, they performed several patterns which was really cool to watch. They demostrated how to escape and defend when attacked from various angles.

Then, the students were to spar with each other. The grandmaster caught them by surprise when they were asked to spar with three people at a time.

If watching them getting beaten up wasn’t enough, some were even asked to break more bricks than was practised. We watched as some got hurt while others held on with the pain.

Nevertheless, the grandmaster was impressed. He said that since everyone already knew the syllabus in and out, it was only fair to test their limits by getting them to perform something unfamiliar, to put in practice what they have learned.Myinthten's second dan black belt grading

At the end of the day, Myinthten earned his 2nd Dan in Black belt and we are all very proud of him.

After the auditions, Veinnill and I were called back along with another 10+ people to act in different short plays.

Veinnill got a role in two plays. Will elaborate later. I got a role as a talking box in another play.

The plays are scheduled to be staged somewhere in June or July. We are both currently working hard to memorise our scripts as rehearsals start next week.

Will update from time to time.

Auditions!!

Veinnill went for this audition organised by PSPA. She was supposed to prepare a monologue. She used President Obama’s election night speech, edited by me (Nilaa, hehe) and gave her own speech as Malaysia’s first lady Prime Minister (it was our father’s idea).

The lady who auditioned her was soooo impressed. She had also asked Veinnill to read up a one-page-long script to check if she could understand quickly and act the part out.

She said that Veinnill had alot of potential although she was shy. Also, Veinnill had been one of the better participants. Yeh, Veinnill!!!

Noticing me standing at the side, the lady roped me in to do the audition as well. Since I hadn’t prepared anything, I was asked to do the script.

Therefore, now, I would also have to follow Veinnill for her weekly rehearsals for short plays as we agreed that we will be alright to take part in the same scenes. Will update the blog about any plays that she will be in.

Anyway, congrats and good luck to Veinnill. All her efforts are finally bearing fruit. Let’s hope she goes a long way.

PS: I’m pulling myself out as soon as possible!!!

Taekwon-do

Myinthten was in Ipoh Parade on the 21st of December for the national level taekwon-do tournament. Since Perak was the host this year, Myinthten’s group was required to perform a demonstration. They choreographed certain patterns and later, took turns to break planks using different techniques. The crowd cheered on again as the whole group reunited for one last demo which was the climax of the event.

PSPA

Veinnill attended a Perak Society Performing Arts (PSPA) course in YMCA on the 24th of November. She learnt various things about performing arts including dance, choir, public speaking, drama, beat boxing amongst others. On the last day, the group performed for an open audience. They performed a play and dance. The play, Tarzan and Jane in the Jungle, showcased the environment in the jungle. The dance comprised of Malay traditional dances. Myinthten attended the show and was taken aback by the stunning performances. Veinnill hopes that more people will join in the course next year.

introducing the narrator…

Myinthten just came back from a youth camp today. He participated during talent nite in one of the performances. We laughed until tears rolled down our cheeks during the performances especially when the wardens had a special sketch done for the participants. They were all really creative and hilarious! Good job to the wardens, campers and the aunts & uncles who monitored them.

New talent

Nigel and Neil are also great musicians. They play the guitar and piano.  Their talents has helped the group on developing  new skills.
